Waikiki Beach
What do you think of when you hear “Hawaii”?
For me it would have to be Waikiki Beach, boogie boards, volcanoes, shrimp, and sushi. That’s all I did and ate in Waikiki. We spent six glorious days in this paradise. The weather was just perfect. It would rain a bit—just a mist really—and it would be perfectly sunny again.
I learned how to body surf here. I rented the boogie board and the fins for about $15 for the entire day. The trick to body surfing, I think, is to always be in front of the wave. So you should paddle way way before you think you should paddle. If you start paddling when you are already on top of the wave, well, it’s too late. You’ll see what I mean when you do it. It was really fun. One warning though: apply sunscreen regularly. If you’re not wearing a shirt while body surfing, you could be burned easily. Even with SPF60. Trust me. Lesson learned.
Every Friday night at 8pm, there is a fireworks display by one of the hotels. I can’t remember which hotel. It’s a really short program but it’s just fun to sit there and wait for it. Everybody does.
For this trip, I brought along one of my old Agfa Isolette III medium format folders so I didn’t have to worry about my camera being stolen (for instance, when I was body surfing you know). If you’ve used one of these medium format folders before, you know that you have to manually advance the film. It’s not like the newer cameras that stop winding once it gets to the next frame.
By the the time the fireworks started, it was really dark. It was so dark that I couldn’t see the image counter! I would leave the shutter open for 2 seconds or so and then I would wind and just “guess”. I should have brought a flashlight, penlight or something! Needless to say I wasted a lot of frames that night. Normally 120 film holds 12 images, I probably had 5 images as I over-turned my film advance to make sure I didn’t have overlapping images. Lesson learned there too. Oh, a sturdy tripod would help too. The fireworks image is blurry, but I still like it.
We really lucked out in terms of accomodations. This trip was a last minute thing (it always is). We booked this trip with expedia and we stayed at the ResortQuest Waikiki Beach Hotel. I really liked this hotel: It was right at the beach and there’s free internet if you have your own wireless enabled laptop.
